Stone Town’s architecture is a fusion of Arabic, Indian, European and African influences. The most famous feature of Zanzibari architecture is the carved wooden do or, a symbol of wealth and status. The variety of building styles on view provides a whistle-stop tour of the island's long and varied history. The long, narrow streets of Stone Town have baraza benches built on each side instead of pavements. Today, baraza are still a meeting point for all sections of Zanzibari society.
